Been Playing Since

It all started in 1971 when we performed a couple of floor spots with acoustic guitars (12-string and 6-string) at a local folk club in our then home town.

Val moved away to London in 1972 and didn't continue playing in public, although she still played her 6-string guitar occasionally for her own enjoyment.

Jimmy continued to sing and play 6 and 12-string guitars with folk and folk rock duos and trios. He was also a drummer in a few bands playing chart hits, progressive rock and country rock covers. He also performed as a solo singer accompanying himself on guitar.

In 2002 we got back together and Val moved back to the North East. We've been playing together since then... first public performance was 10 August 2003 at a local folk club in the North East of England.

The Duo

jiva are a UK-based duo who play contemporary songs with a repertoire (expanding slowly) which is a mix of self-penned material and our own arrangements of carefully chosen songs by other people - eg Allan Taylor, Anthony John Clarke, CSNY, Eagles, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Linda Thompson, Magna Carta, Melanie Safka, Nanci Griffith, Paul Siebel.

Most often seen in the North East, we play at folk clubs, concert venues, small festivals, corporate and social functions, fundraisers, coffee mornings, etc... or even a 'house concert' in your front room!

We also help charitable organisations (for example the Blyth Volunteer Lifeboat Service and Cancer Research UK) by playing at their fundraising and awareness events, and we support local charity MIND Active by giving monthly performances for residential care homes.

Setup

Val's T1

  • Ch1: vocal mic
  • Ch2: 6-string guitar
  • Ch3: 12-string guitar
  • Output from Ch3 goes into the Input of Ch4
  • Ch4: connected to output of Ch3 - this channel used when Jimmy plays Val's 12-string
  • Master Out goes into the Input of Ch4 on Jimmy's T1

Jimmy's T1

  • Ch1: vocal mic
  • Ch2: 6-string guitar
  • Ch3: 12-string guitar
  • Ch4: connected to Master Out of Val's T1
  • Digital ToneMatch® connection goes to the L1 powerstand

This way:

  1. We each control our own individual mix on our individual T1s.
  2. The relative mix between us is then being controlled by using the Volume level control on Jimmy's T1 Ch4 (ie Val's Master Out).
  3. The overall output level is then controlled by Jimmy's T1.

Other Comments

We're very new to the world of PA and sound reinforcement - before we discovered the L1 we always preferred to play acoustically. But the L1 allows us to sound like us, but more so.
