A Wiki provides another mechanism through which we can share knowledge. It is different from conventional web pages because readers can update the pages they are viewing. Let's talk about the first group of people. They may be content to browse through the forums or use a search engine. The Bose L1™ Wiki Project

Executive Summary

A Wiki provides another mechanism through which we can share knowledge. It is different from conventional web pages because readers can update the pages they are viewing. This holds the potential to be a powerful addition to the Bose Musicians Community Message Boards (the Forum), not replacing it, but providing another mechanism for supporting the community of owners who use the internet.

This page is for a high level introduction to the project. For implementation plans see L1™ Wiki Site Plan

Discussion

People come to the Bose Musicians Forum for many reasons:

-Looking for information -Share information -Community -Affiliation -Anonymity

Let's talk about the first group of people. They may be content to browse through the forums or use a search engine. Others may want something written and presented in a more conventional (for the web) format. A Wiki can be a mechanism for sharing knowledge in a much more concise way than a discussion thread in a forum.

Quality of Information

Because the content of a Wiki is contributed by its readers, there is no greater assurance that the what is written there is in any way better than in a forum. It is probably no worse.

Moderation

There is no formal moderation queue. It is possible to have people create their pages in the Sandbox area. Then an administrator can migrate pages to the live collection of documents. This would be extremely cumbersome and runs afoul of the spirit of social software.

Implications

If there is no moderation queue (giving the opportunity to review content before it is published) it is not possible to prevent undesirable content from being posted. It is likely that it would be seen and changed quickly by the readers. But that does not guarantee that it won't happen in the first place.

Bose® Musicians Community Message Boards

We should consider how a Wiki will impact The Forum. We are doing something similar already We already have two "Unofficial Guides" that are open to input from our community. It is rare for someone to contribute directly. I think the community has developed the expectation that if anything 'good' turns up in the forum, that I will find a place for it in the Unofficial Guides. Sometimes a community member will post a message requesting that I add something to the Unofficial Guides.

Having a Wiki may encourage people to contribute more directly, but it may not. But having the Wiki should make it much easier to find knowledge because it has several ways through which information is linked and cross referenced.

Staying connected to the forum?

We can do things like display who is online on The Forum. Look for the purple bar on the right side of this panel: NOTE: This feature would probably not be supportable with MediaWiki (this software)
