Throw Over Distance
Summary
These are projections and estimates based on previously published data from Bose.
Assumptions:
- All values are calculated at 2 kHz
- S1 Pro, L1 Compact, L1 Pro8, F1 Model 812 have a critical distance[1] of 0 meters/feet[2]
- L1 Model 1S and L1 Pro16 have a critical distance[1] of approximately 3 meters (10 feet)[2]
- L1 Model II and L1 Pro32 have a critical distance[1] of approximately 10 meters (33 feet)[2]

L1 Pro Throw Over Distance
This is the chart used to estimate critical distance and drop-off over distance. The source is 13:25 Which L1 Pro Portable System is Right for You?
L1 Pro Compared to L1 Legacy
Assuming that all systems are run at their rated maximum outputs:
- L1 Pro8 will be +6 dB SPL higher than the L1 Compact at any distance
- L1 Model 1S will be +3 dB SPL higher than the L1 Pro8 at any distance
- L1 Pro16 will be +6 dB SPL higher than the L1 Model 1S (beyond 2 meters)
- L1 Model II will be +3 dB SPL higher than the L1 Pro16 (beyond 4 meters)
- L1 Pro32 will be +7 to +10 dB SPL higher than the L1 Pro16 (beyond 4 meters)
- L1 Pro32 will be +7 dB SPL higher than the L1 Model II at any distance
The table below is adapted from the chart from Bose[2] and previously published data.
All Models
Assuming that all systems are run at their rated maximum outputs:
- L1 Compact will be +6 dB SPL higher than the S1 Pro at any distance
- L1 Pro8 will be +6 dB SPL higher than the L1 Compact at any distance
- L1 Model 1S will be +3 dB SPL higher than the L1 Pro8 at any distance
- L1 Pro16 will be +6 dB SPL higher than the L1 Model 1S (beyond 2 meters)
- L1 Model II will be +3 dB SPL higher than the L1 Pro16 (beyond 4 meters)
- L1 Pro32 will be +7 dB SPL higher than the L1 Model II at any distance
- F1 812 is +4 dB SPL higher than the L1 Pro32 but the drop-off over distance is greater. The result: Beyond 6 meters (20 feet) the L1 Pro32 has higher SPL.
The table below is adapted from the chart from Bose[2] and previously published data.
Model 1S and Model II
Power Stands
Model 1S Model II Cylindrical Radiators
Top Section
Top sections are physically identical (same dimensions).
Note: The actual model designation is on the label on the back channel.
- Top array 39.63” H x 4.15” W x 4.13” D (100.6 cm x 10.6 cm x 10.5 cm)
- Model 1S has silver background
- Model II has black background
Lower Section
Lower sections are physically different (Model 1S is 3.9" shorter).
- Model 1S is approximately 39.63” H x 4.15” W x 4.13” D (100.6 cm x 10.6 cm x 10.5 cm)
- Model II is approximately 43.5” H x 4.15” W x 4.13” D (111.0 mm x 9.0 cm x 10.5 cm)
- Close up view of the ends (Model 1S on top, Model II below)
- Top caps are identical
Questions
Q: Can I use the Model 1S lower extension (no drivers) in the Model II with the Model II Cylindrical Radiator® top section?
- A: No. No sound will come out from the top section.

Cylindrical Radiator®s
Cylindrical Radiator®s are not interchangeable across models
Specifically (and without exception)
- The Cylindrical Radiator speaker sections of the L1 Classic, the L1 Model I and L1 Model 1S and the L1 Model II are not compatible with each other.
- The Cylindrical Radiator speaker sections of the L1 Classic can only be used with the Classic PS1 power stand (no orange markings on the input/output panel).
- The Cylindrical Radiator speaker sections of the L1 Model I (orange markings on the back of both sections) can only be used with the Model I PS1 power stand (orange markings on the input/output panel).
- The Cylindrical Radiator speaker sections of the L1 Model II can only be used with the L1 Model II power stand.
- The Cylindrical Radiator speaker sections of the L1 Model 1S can only be used with the L1 Model 1S power stand.
